According to the Canadian Fitness and Lifestyle Research Institute (www.cflri.ca),
  • Three out of five Canadian children and youth between five and 17 are not active enough for optimal growth and development.
  • Children's physical activity levels decrease with age. One to four-year-olds spend 25 hours in physical play per week, five to 12-year-olds spend eighteen hours being physically active and teenagers, aged 13 – 17 spend 15 hours.
  • Childhood and adolescence are prime times to develop the skills and habits necessary for long-term physical activity.
